Loved people love people. Forgiven people forgive people. Adored people adore people. Freed people free people. But when we are still locked in our own prisons, it is impossible to crave the liberation of others. Misery prefers company. Or maybe
barriers and repairs relationships. It invites in the lonely and defeats shame. It provides the lighted path to forgiveness, which sets everyone free. Love makes us brave, pulls up seats to the table, defuses bigotry, and attacks injustice. It is our most powerful spiritual tool. Do not underestimate it as the solution to almost everything that is broken.
While forgiveness might feel like abandoning justice, it actually sets us free. It liberates us from the crushing responsibility to oversee the resolution, which may or may not ever come.
It removes any authority another person holds over our wholeness; it steals its power.
We promised our kids early and often: You can tell us anything. We won’t freak out. You can’t shock us. Nothing is a deal breaker, and everything is up for discussion.
I’m confident in the end game, which is that God is good and He loves us and He could not possibly be unfair, arbitrary, cold, or abusive. He couldn’t be. It is outside the possibility of His character. It isn’t just that God is loving but that He is love itself
