“One more question,” I say. “In a Jane Austen story, how does it all end? There’s a happily ever after, right?” Clive gets solemn. “Depends on which character you are.”

Clive doesn’t back down. “Austen knew that surprises make stories more interesting. You can’t be afraid of them, or you might miss out.”

It’s a bad idea to linger on feelings that shouldn’t be there anyway.
