On December 7, 1941, Japanese forces attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On December 8, 1941, in a speech in which he described the Japanese attack as “a day which will live in infamy,” American President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on the Empire of Japan. Hitler declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941, and hours after doing so, the United States declared war on Germany.
