Early on in his life, Hitler, like many Austrian Germans, had developed strong German nationalist ideas. He had expressed his loyalty only to Germany, used the German greeting Heil, and sang the German national anthem, “Deutschlandlied,” instead of the Austrian Imperial anthem.
