Back in 2008, Netflix’s online video delivery service ran on a monolithic J2EE application hosted in one of their data centers. However, starting in 2009, they began re-architecting this system to be what they called cloud native—it was designed to run entirely in the Amazon public cloud and to be resilient enough to survive significant failures.
