Any minute now, they’d probably reach the signpost marking the middle of nowhere.

He approached the woman with a wagging tail, pressed himself against her legs, and held still while being patted like a carpet in

need of cleaning.

Wasn’t that the problem? With all the advances in medicine, with powerful anesthetics at their disposal, people didn’t take pain seriously anymore, just suppressed it with drugs. A blessing, but also a curse, because pain could be a warning sign—a symptom of greater physical or mental problems. And what happened when it could no longer be suppressed?
