He called you fearless, determined, and without equal. You, sir, are precisely the man I need. My inspectors are good men, but I need someone better than good. I need a competent and intelligent man, someone who can think quickly and act accordingly.
"If you want a man to do what you want, you have to subtly suggest it, not order him. You have to show him the benefits of doing what you want, as India did when she reminded him that he'll be busy again tomorrow and wouldn't want to feel unwell. She's a marvel at subtle suggestion."
"Of course, my dear," Matt said. "I'd travel to the end of the Earth with you. You're excellent company."
"You do know that I could ravish you in the carriage when we're alone together if I wished." "Why do you think I keep the curtains open?"
"You're the bravest woman I've ever met."
He grunted. "It means I should stop introducing you as my assistant and start calling you my partner." "That would be quite a promotion, but no one will believe I'm your equal." His smile widened, but he kept his eyes shut. "They will once they get to know you."
"Your conscience is dull. It needs a little adventure." "I've endured quite enough adventure, thank you. I'd rather sit here with a good book, right now. If you think that dull, then that says more about you than me."
He stood there, his hand extended, his smile slipping. "India? Are you mad at me?" I took his hand. "Matt, you're the most agreeable person I've ever met. Trying to stay mad at you is like trying to make clock hands go backwards." "Impossible?" "No, actually it is possible, but it's pointless. Why would anyone want to do such a thing?"
