The older I get, the more I realize it isn't just about making it work; it's about producing an artifact that is readable, maintainable, and efficient. Generally speaking, I find that, contrary to popular belief, the cleaner and nicer the program, the faster it's going to run. And if it doesn't, it'll be easy to make it fast. As they say, it's easier to optimize correct code than to correct optimized code.
