Langton had learned that by increasing the temperature and pressure enough, you could go from steam to water without ever going through a phase transition at all; in general, gases and liquids are just two aspects of a single fluid phase of matter. So the distinction wasn't a fundamental one, and the resemblance of liquids to the Game of Life was only superficial.
