The men on duty - particularly Dyatlov - were exhibiting strong signs of a psychological phenomenon often associated with man-made disasters, known as groupthink.

What makes it so depressing is that a lot of what those men did to save the reactor only made the situation worse. They sacrificed their lives for nothing.
