Diet Coke has long been the second most popular soft drink, just behind regular Coca Cola. In 2010, diet drinks made up 42 percent of Coca Cola’s sales in the United States. Despite initial enthusiasm, though, the use of artificial sweeteners has recently leveled off, primarily due to safety concerns.
