“But the FBI has jurisdiction over Indian matters,” Hugo said. “Yes, and the FBI has never shown much enthusiasm for going after Indians for any type of wrongdoing.

I wonder how true this really is?

Investigators with far more resources and experience should get the nod on this one. They were lawyers, after all, not cops. They didn’t want to carry guns. They were trained to go after corrupt judges, not organized crime syndicates.
Lisa
Foreshadowing for sure. This will be a wild ride.

Chief and his cronies.”
Lisa
Ugh the over use of the term “cronies” is so cringy. I’ve never met a real person who used the term seriously.

She lost consciousness en route to the center, so did not hear the news that Hugo had died.
Lisa
What!? This is how you kill off a main character?! Where is the love of Hugo’s character!? Basically makes him out to be lazy, always sleeping, and now you kill him off with the brief mention of his death from the accident

“If you don’t mind my saying so,” Justin said, “I don’t think we’re really cut out for this. If this criminal activity is really happening, what the hell are we doing poking around it? This is for guys with guns and badges and all that crap.”
Lisa
Yikes this line is spoken by a so called intelligent lawyer? I get irritated by stuff like this. It reads as though Justin is a dumb witted kid. Is he supposed to be?

The brother died.
Lisa
Who wants to bet the brother isn’t dead? I’ll betcha two nickels he’s part of the “secret informant” trying to take Dubose down. Calling it right now.

Webb said, “Maybe as few as five years. That could be our recommendation, though, as you know, the final decision will be up to the judge.”
Lisa
Just a reminder: this guy killed someone and injured another by causing a car wreck, should be jailed for life, and is getting offered a deal to turn in “worse” criminals. If he accepts, he’ll be out in five years. Killed someone, out in five. This should not be the way the justice system works at all.

They had no idea where Zeke Foreman was hiding, and didn’t really care. Their party was over. They were concentrating on their grim futures.
Lisa
This is not believable to me. Men with nothing to lose will stop at nothing to get revenge. They will hunt these snitches to the ends of the earth
