Let me acknowledge that I sometimes feel this way, too. I think it is a terrible thing when Republicans periodically capture the nation’s commanding heights. But even when it comes to containing the Republicans—the area where the Democratic Party’s mission is so clear and straightforward—it has not been a great success.
