‘I don’t go looking for trouble,’ said Harry, nettled. ‘Trouble usually finds me.’
what you fear most of all is – fear.
‘Professor Snape’s very interested in the Dark Arts,’ he blurted out.
‘Nasty temper he’s got, that Sirius Black.’
‘Honestly, am I the only person who’s ever bothered to read Hogwarts, A History?’ said Hermione crossly to Harry and Ron.
‘I do not believe a single person inside this castle would have helped Black enter it,’ said Dumbledore, and his tone made it so clear that the subject was closed that Snape didn’t reply.
‘Didn’t they want to help, sir?’ said Percy. ‘Oh yes,’ said Dumbledore coldly. ‘But I’m afraid no Dementor will cross the threshold of this castle while I am Headmaster.’
‘I don’t know why you’re worried, Oliver, Hufflepuff are a pushover.
The Slytherin team were looking very smug indeed, and none more so than Malfoy.
‘Be quiet,’ said Snape coldly. ‘I did not ask for information. I was merely commenting on Professor Lupin’s lack of organisation.’
‘I was under the impression that I was taking this lesson, not you. And I am telling you all to turn to page three hundred and ninety-four.’
‘Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.’
‘Snape’s never been like this with any of our other Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers, even if he did want the job,’ Harry said to Hermione. ‘Why’s he got it in for Lupin?
‘Why couldn’t Black have hidden in Snape’s office, eh? He could have finished him off for us!’
‘Don’t beat yourself up, Harry, you’re still the best Seeker we’ve ever had.’
The Whomping Willow was a very violent tree which stood alone in the middle of the grounds.
nothing anyone said or did could make Harry feel any better, because they only knew half of what was troubling him.
Was the Grim going to haunt him until he actually died?
‘The Dementors affect you worse than the others because there are horrors in your past that the others don’t have.’
‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.’
Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs Purveyors of Aids to Magical Mischief-Makers are proud to present THE MARAUDER’S MAP
‘Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs,’ sighed George, patting the heading of the map. ‘We owe them so much.’ ‘Noble men, working tirelessly to help a new generation of law-breakers,’ said Fred solemnly.
Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can’t see where it keeps its brain.
Hogsmeade looked like a Christmas card; the little thatched cottages and shops were all covered in a layer of crisp snow; there were holly wreaths on the doors and strings of enchanted candles hanging in the trees.
A hatred such as he had never known before was coursing through Harry like poison.
Get a grip, Malfoy’s just hoping you’ll get yourself killed before he has to play you at Quidditch.’
‘I’ll never know what they’d have wanted because, thanks to Black, I’ve never spoken to them,’ said Harry shortly.
Harry, Ron and Hermione looked at each other. They had never seen eye to eye with Hagrid about what he called ‘interesting creatures’ and other people called ‘terrifying monsters’.
‘Er – shall I make a cup of tea?’ said Ron. Harry stared at him. ‘It’s what my mum does whenever someone’s upset,’ Ron muttered, shrugging.
‘They’re dead,’ he told himself sternly. ‘They’re dead, and listening to echoes of them won’t bring them back.
She – er – got a bit shirty with me. Told me I’d got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about you staying alive. Just because I told her I didn’t care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch on it first.’ Wood shook his head in disbelief. ‘Honestly, the way she was yelling at me … you’d think I’d said something terrible.
‘I’m not buying anything Malfoy thinks is good,’ said Harry flatly.
A small amount of talent on the Quidditch pitch made him think he was a cut above the rest of us, too.
‘My dad didn’t strut,’ said Harry, before he could stop himself. ‘And nor do I.’
‘Mr Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people’s business.’
‘Mr Prongs agrees with Mr Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.’
‘Mr Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a Professor.’
‘Mr Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.’
‘You won’t have to do all the work alone this time, Hermione. I’ll help.’
Indeed, I don’t remember ever meeting a student whose mind was so hopelessly Mundane.’
If only there had been a Dementor around … As a sobbing Wood passed Harry the Cup, as he lifted it into the air, Harry felt he could have produced the world’s best Patronus.
‘The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant’s aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight … before midnight … the servant … will set out … to rejoin … his master …’
‘He’s the dog … he’s an Animagus …’
‘I trusted you,’ he shouted at Lupin, his voice wavering out of control, ‘and all the time you’ve been his friend!’
‘You’re the cleverest witch of your age I’ve ever met, Hermione.’
‘Is a schoolboy grudge worth putting an innocent man back inside Azkaban?’
‘Because you never did anything for anyone unless you could see what was in it for you.
‘Believe me. I never betrayed James and Lily. I would have died before I betrayed them.’
‘If you made a better rat than human, it’s not much to boast about, Peter,’ said Black harshly.
‘You should have realised,’ said Lupin quietly. ‘If Voldemort didn’t kill you, we would. Goodbye, Peter.’
