A young man in his early twenties walked through the twin front doors and into the entrance hall as the final visitors straggled out. His most distinguishing feature was the bandage circling the upper portion of his head.
Aaron
On the first page, first paragraph, second sentence, we meet the villain of five books. Toono is one amazing villain.

This sight was the first alarming signal of his transition into a person he never thought he’d be. Regardless, he had accomplished his first mission.
Aaron
Again, Toono already feels pity and is actually hurt by what he has caused.

The light wasn’t ordinary. There was no source. No candles. It simply existed on its own. The light didn’t wane the farther out it stretched either. It stopped abruptly, as if there was an invisible wall holding it in.
Aaron
Wait really this important thing later on in the series is mentioned before Bryson's name?

Meow Meow! Someone who is just super likeable and helpful to Olivia (if anything else, I forget) until the later books, when he becomes a necessity to the plot!

So Olivia’s placement in the Passion Kingdom was odd.
Aaron
I wonder why… maybe, you know, book 2?

In fact, her personality bore more resemblance to her kingdom’s natural rival—the Still Kingdom.
Aaron
I really wonder why. I want to say why but book 2 spoilers.

This is the Light Realm, not the Dark. Our realm does not hold the Power Kingdom. If anyone is known for their brute strength, it’s the people living in that kingdom.

The only thing he knew is that he would jump off one of the kingdom’s cliffs for her heart. Below would be a vast meadow of all the different flowery scents, exactly like the perfumes that were hitting his nose as he stood a hair’s-breadth away from Lilu.

OOH Agnos, one of my favorites though moderately boring until book 3, then amazing.

Bryson’s shoulders fell as Agnos took the wind out of his sails just as quickly as he’d inflated them. It was a clever tactic. He built him up just to tear him down. Bryson realized he would have to be careful with this one.
Aaron
Yeah, Agnos is stronger than he looks. Or fights, because he doesn't.

The room went silent, for nobody wanted to give the obvious answer to the silly question—except perhaps for Jilly, whose face was contorted with concentration as she counted her fingers. Math was obviously not her strong point. Honestly, when it came to her mind, there probably weren’t many strong points, but Bryson gave her the benefit of the doubt. It took a while, but eventually realization dawned on her face. She raised her hand violently and started making huffing noises in order to be recognized. Grand Director Poicus and the Adren Director smiled while the rest of the Energy Directors ...more

Aaron
This is a theme a lot of authors skimp on, if they mention it. They’re mentioned as people, but that is not the main conflict. They’re from somewhere else, but they’re still people.

Debo was standing face-to-face with her, the shadow of his towering frame engulfing her. He had gone from where he was pacing, some twenty feet away, to directly in front of her in a split-second. Bryson smirked, then realized his hand was empty. It was curved as if it was still holding a cup. He looked back at Debo and, sure enough, he now had Bryson’s glass of lemonade. Not only had Debo gone from point A to point B within in the blink of an eye, he’d also taken a detour to a third point.
