While some people can interpret “being powerless” in a benign way, others decide that it means they have no control not just over drugs but also over multiple spheres in their lives, including political action. This can be particularly damaging to women and members of minority groups, who are already faced with far too much powerlessness and do not have anything of the overweening sense of entitlement it was intended to address in the white men who designed it.
