“Have you never heard of catching more flies with honey?” “I’ve never understood why one need catch a fly,” she said, deliberately pasting a wide, winning smile on her face.
“Once again, you remind me of your own terrible sufferings, having to be rich and powerful beyond measure, and all because seventeen other poor, put-upon men were hit by falling sheep.” He continued to advance. “I thought it was only one falling sheep?” “A sheep with a ducal vendetta. You should be careful in the wilderness.”
“No one knows who I am,” he said. Sesily smirked. “Your Grace. You’re an unmarried duke with a king’s fortune. You’d have to be a thorough cabbagehead to believe that no one knows who you are. You may have the worst tailor in Christendom, but you’re not a cabbagehead, are you?”
“The Duke of Chapin has been left at the altar three times. And he’s a duke. That’s a virtual impossibility, unless there’s something terribly wrong with him.” “Such as?” “I don’t know, but if three spinsters have deserted him at such a critical time, I’m guessing the answer is akin to scales.”
He decided then and there to destroy Derek Hawkins. For touching her. For hurting her. He would leave him broken here, in this dark room. He’d have to apologize to the Marchioness of Eversley, he imagined, and purchase a replacement carpet, but surely she would understand that the world was better off without this loathsome eel in it.
She took a deep breath. “My reputation is ruined, because I am a woman, and we are not our own. We belong to the world. Our bodies, our minds.” “You don’t belong to anyone. That’s the point. If you did, this would not be such a scandal.” She raised a brow. “I belong to you, do I not?” “No.”
“Listen to me,” Sesily said with firm conviction, squeezing Lily’s hands tightly and forcing her to meet her eyes. “You do not let them win. Not ever. There is nothing in the world they like more than tearing a woman down for having too much courage. And there is nothing in the world that makes them angrier than not being able to break her.”
“Because I know what it feels like to have them all loathe you. And I’ve seen them chase another away. Women like us must stay together, Lovely Lily.”
