It was a very dubious-looking, nay, a very dark and dismal night, bitingly cold and cheerless.

To the native Indian of Peru, the continual sight of the snowhowdahed Andes conveys naught of dread, except, perhaps, in the mere fancying of the eternal frosted desolateness reigning at such vast altitudes, and the natural conceit of what a fearfulness it would be to lose oneself in such inhuman solitudes.
I think "snowhowdahed" is really "snow-howdahed". So in this context, the Andes are elephants and the snow is their howdah. (Also, I didn't know what a howdah was until today) :)
Thus, then, the muffled rollings of a milky sea; the bleak rustlings of the festooned frosts of mountains; the desolate shiftings of the windrowed snows of prairies; all these, to Ishmael, are as the shaking of that buffalo robe to the frightened colt!
Muffled rollings, bleak rustlings, festooned frosts, desolate shiftings, *and* windrowed snows.
That's a heck of a sentence!

I read this about a dozen times before I was comfortable with how I thought it should be read. And then I enjoyed it.

In the midst of the personified impersonal, a personality stands here.

Here be it said, that this pertinacious pursuit of one particular whale, continued through day into night, and through night into day, is a thing by no means unprecedented in the South sea fishery.
Ah! how they still strove through that infinite blueness to seek out the thing that might destroy them!
Here’s food for thought, had Ahab time to think; but Ahab never thinks; he only feels, feels, feels; THAT’S tingling enough for mortal man! to think’s audacity. God only has that right and privilege. Thinking is, or ought to be, a coolness and a calmness; and our poor hearts throb, and our poor brains beat too much for that.
