You guys loved me even when I was twelve and lanky and awkward.”
“Well, I miss you already,”
“Why would you do this to me? It was the three of us, Evan! The Three Musketeers! The three amigos! The three… freaking Powerpuff Girls; I don’t know! Bubbles and Buttercup didn’t start dating!” “Well, they were sisters, and also six years old,” he input quietly, and then, louder, added, “Wait, am I Bubbles?” “Yes!” I snapped.
Didn’t you hear me say that I’ve had a crush on Riley for years? Or that she kissed me back?” “I think I repressed all of that about ten seconds ago, actually, but thanks for reminding me.”
she kissed me on the cheek again. She’d never really done that growing up, and I wondered if being affectionate with Evan had just brought that side out of her. I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. The feeling I got when she did it wasn’t unpleasant, but it wasn’t comfortable, either. Later, I’d refer to this day – the day I spent several hours just lying on my bed, napping with Riley at my side – as Epiphany Day. Maybe I had feelings for one of them. And, even worse, maybe I had feelings for the one that wasn’t a boy.
“20 Signs You’re Actually Dating Your BFF”. I was very careful to avoid clicking that one.
Instead, I stayed up for another hour thinking about what I wanted to wear if I was going to look my best. For the boys, of course. Always the boys.
If she found out, I’d lie to her, same as I’d lied to him. I’d lie to everyone, if that was what it took to avoid making this into a big deal. I’d even lie to myself.

She swallowed hard and raised her free hand to my cheek to wipe away a tear with her thumb, continuing, “And I hate that I missed this. “You’re… gay. He’s head over heels for you and you’re gay.”
Sometimes the people you least expect make the best couples.” “Yeah,” I echoed, unable to look her in the eyes. “I guess they do.”
at least I won’t have to deal with trying to act normal around Riley. She’s just gonna die instead.”
Things between all of us were just showing signs of being on their way back to normal, but every time Riley and I looked at each other, I could tell we were both thinking about ruining it all.
I’m guessing she doesn’t know about you.” “I don’t know about me.”
If kissing the last boy before Josh had been the kindergarten of kisses, then Josh was around late middle school and this was Graduation Day, complete with celebratory fireworks.
“If we lacked consciences, we could make out every day for the rest of our lives. But we’re only awful people, as opposed to downright evil ones.”
“Our plan was to choose between dating openly or waiting for him to get over you. Now apparently our choices are to date openly or to date in secret.” “I do kind of prefer the second set of choices,” Riley admitted, though she looked guilty as she said it. “But that’s completely selfish and I know it.”
“I wish friendship could just coexist with love without anyone having to wait for acceptance,”
he still got to be with you. Well, theoretically. The whole lesbianism thing kind of threw a wrench in that plan. But he got to hold your hand. I’d like to hold your hand.”
I wondered if Riley had realized, as she sat in Madison’s basement with us and watched us kiss, who she’d been jealous of.
