SPOILER ALERT In this book there is a character called Gifford. Gifford is a deformed cripple with a heavy speech impediment. Through the entire book Michael paints him as a hapless love lorn loser. But in the final chapter through a series of mistakes and misadventure, wearing ill fitting armor sitting on a horse so tall it scares the shit out of him, he becomes the hero. I wrote to Michael complimenting him on his writing and concluded by saying, “I wept when Gifford became the knight in shining armor”. Michael emailed me back and simply said, “so did I”
