When we distribute authority, as discussed in the previous chapter, we distribute it not to individual humans, but to the roles that they fill. Particular roles are invested with the authority to carry out certain tasks and pursue particular aims. When the responsibilities attached to a role become too much for one individual to carry, that role may further need to break itself down into multiple sub-roles, becoming a “circle.”
