I should note here that I am using the term “ethics” in its original sense—not primarily as an account of what we are obliged or forbidden to do, but as a more capacious reflection on the sort of ethos we want to inhabit. Nor do I wish to join the culture wars surrounding “technology”—as being either an apocalyptic force or a saving one that heralds the arrival of a new global intelligence, etc.
