Such magical language is almost unheard of in the Middle Ages.86 It would appear that it’s only in a resolutely materialist age that the ability to simply produce things by saying that they are there comes to be seen as scandalous, even diabolical. And the surest sign that one has entered such a materialist age is precisely the fact that it is seen so.
