What is clear is that although Stalin despised Stolypin, he found himself facing Stolypin’s challenges—the village as the key to Russia’s destiny, peasants as a supposed political problem in opposition to the reigning regime. But Stalin was proposing to force through the diametrically opposite policy: annihilation of the individual yeoman farmer, in favor of collectively worked, collectively owned farms.
