Michael J. Fox was first diagnosed with the disease in 1991, at the age of thirty-one, at a high point in his career. By the time he went public about his condition five years later he was starring in one of the top-rated shows on television (Spin City), had a string of post–Back to the Future movie hits under his belt, and was one of the most popular and widely recognized celebrities in America.
