I believed she’d forgive me. She’d forgive me because she had to. We were bound, her and I.
“I was trying to understand Barnabas’s strange fascination. You smell absolutely revolting.
“You saw what she is. Her hair . . . She bears the mark . . .”
Not a glimpse of brown or black or even red amongst them.
“What does it matter if she bears a rider’s marks when there is nothing to ride?”
The Pendragons were an ancient line. And thanks to my mother’s poor choice of men, I was a part of it through my father’s side.
“Sanguis et Flamma Floreant,” I read aloud.
“It means Let blood and flame flourish. It’s written in Classical Sangrathan. I suppose you’re not familiar with it.”
If I accepted that this was real, then it meant I was alive. I was betrothed. I was a hostage of vampires. And I was a student.
If it wasn’t for the vampires, I decided in that instant, Bloodwing Academy might have been, well, beautiful.
But where Blake’s features were lean and dangerous, Theo’s were more filled out and, dare I say it, almost pleasant.
“Are you Viktor’s son?” Theo shook his head. “No, no. My mother is our estimable uncle’s youngest sister. Marcus and Blake’s father takes precedence in the family order. Dear Uncle Viktor has no progeny. None that we know of.”

“Our bond isn’t strong enough for me to feed from you . . . yet,” he added, sneering. “Let’s go.”
You can and you will. I command it. Whatever this girl is doing to you, it must cease.
“They’re not all like that. Most use their power for good. It’s different, serving people who are superior when they really are.”
Professor Rodriguez’s fierce expression faltered for the briefest moment, a hint of color rising to his cheeks.
Our gazes locked and a slow smirk curled over his lips. My heart skipped a beat and for the first time I saw something in those pale silver eyes. Awareness. Did he know the effect he was having on me?
“Shut the fuck up, Marcus,” I spat. “I’d been out on campaign for days. I was hungry.”
“She’s mine,” I snarled. “You’ll keep your fucking hands off her.”
“You’ll keep her on a short leash, Blake. The binding ritual in the Black Keep was but the first step. Still, the girl doesn’t need to know that.”
“She’s pretty, Regan. I didn’t realize how pretty she was,”
