Not if Blake hasn’t specifically asked you.”
But he says he can’t bring me with him.” I wondered if Blake actually could but just didn’t want to.
“But in that dress Kage sent, you’re going to outshine them all. I can’t wait to see the look on Regan’s face when she sees you.”
who was to say Blake would even care?
“Just so you know, Kage has never brought a date to one of these things before.”
“You’re being such a bore tonight, Blake.” “And you’re being a petulant bitch, as always,”
She’d never smiled at me like that. She seemed happy.
There was no way I was dancing with Regan.
But no. It was Pendragon. Always Pendragon.
Give her to someone else. Or keep her for himself. But this wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
as if he’d already had too much to drink.
But not as erotic as the feel of Pendragon’s gown slipping off her shoulders.
Everything about you is sheer perfection. Surely you know that.”
“You don’t want everyone to know what a bad girl you’ve been, do you?”
Afterwards, the girl was promised riches and glory. Her family was well-compensated but she could never return to them.
I realized what must be happening. The blood was powering some sort of enchantment. A powerful one. Then it clicked into place. The girl was fuel.
I hate the idea of it. And so did my father. He tried to change things.”
If you do, they’ll be killed—right along with you.”
A girl’s high-pitched giggle, eerie and out of place. A sharp, terrified scream followed. It sounded as if it had come from a much younger-sounding child. My blood ran cold.
That he could use thrallweave on another highblood. Then I wondered if anyone really knew what Blake Drakharrow was truly capable of, least of all me.
Not to mention I’d be a hell of a lot closer to getting what I really wanted.
“The subject we’re talking about,” he said slowly, “is the most dangerous one in existence.”
“The only way you’re ever going to have a chance in hell of finding that out now is if you survive the Consort Games.”
“Aenia. She’s not my sister. Not really.”
“What I mean by that is, he loves to kill. He doesn’t use thralls. He prefers to hunt and then to feed. He slaughtered Aenia’s real family. He left her to die. She was barely two years old. I found her, bleeding out.” I paused, swallowing hard. “I turned her.”
“Made her like us. She was a blightborn. I made her a highblood.”
Foulbloods they’re called. Blightborn who have been turned.”
“Everything I have done has been to protect you. We’re bound, you and I, whether you like it or not. Marcus is a monster. He’s also my family. Which makes him your family. Aenia is . . . She’s a child.”
When I looked at him, I didn’t see the same person he’d been at the start of the year. I wondered what he saw when he looked at me.
I knew he wanted Pendragon to get through this as badly as I did, and yet when I’d practically begged him to help me give her some kind of an advantage he’d claimed he’d already done what he could.
“Do you really think I’d risk stealing some happiness for myself if it could result in another person’s disfigurement, dismemberment, or decapitation?
The key words being for now. I had no doubt he’d try to extend his reach as soon as he dared.
We both knew what the Crown of Bone meant for her.
“I’m going to help you across. I need you to promise not to attack me when I come towards you.”
I was testing you.” She shrugged. “So I got a little carried away.”
“Regan wasn’t the one who sent me to fight you that day. Though, of course, she was thrilled that I did.” I stared at her. “Then, who did?” “I’m sure you can figure it out on your own.”
“That fucking bitch Regan. She must have paid someone off. No wonder it took you so long to come out. Evander wanted us to move on and in another minute we would have.”
“Blake must be so pissed,” she muttered. She grabbed my hand. “Get ready. Last one.”
“For Blake, sure. But not just because of him. I fucking hate Regan,” she said with a grin that showed her pointed fangs. “I’ve been waiting for this for years. I can’t wait to see what happens to her after today.”
But just because he’s abandoned mine doesn’t mean I’m going to give him up to you so easily.” I was astonished. Not least of all at her admission.
Rodriguez and Blake were much more proficient.
“Blake gave me a little taste of something special.” “You’re lying.” Her eyes widened with fury and disbelief. “You’re fucking lying. He wouldn’t.”
Why shouldn’t I return the favor?
