Kenyan runners would never have become the leading force in running that they are today if not for a fortuitous accident. British missionaries in Kenya endeavored to spread both Christianity and education there by building schools such as St. Patrick’s High School in Iten, which opened its doors in 1961. Many of the children who attended these schools ran to and from class daily, motorized transportation being a luxury few could afford.
