Infants as young as 2–3 months share the same standards of beauty as adults, preferring to look at faces that adults find attractive; hence standards of beauty cannot just be cultural artefacts. Biological factors (evolved instincts) are clearly involved and these universal preferences derive from signals of mate quality (indications of youth, health, fitness and fertility).
