A chin settles on top of my head a second later, a soft humming sound emanating from the man child behind me. “Zav,” I groan. “You almost made me spill my coffee.” “Shh,” he hushes. “I’m getting my morning cuddle time in.”
“I just need to be in my own room. It’ll make me feel better to be around my own things.” His brows knit. “Do you ... not feel safe ... with me?” he mumbles, voice cracking on the last word and breaking my heart all over again.
Zavier plops the box filled with miscellaneous clothes and toiletries on my bed. Stopping, he zeroes in on something at the bottom of the box. Gasping he pulls out a pair lacy black underwear I found him hoarding in his dresser. “You stole these!” He holds the lacy panties to his chest like they’re something precious. “That’s what I should be saying to you, mister.” He pockets them once again but I roll my eyes and let it go.
“I want to take care you,” Zavier’s honey smooth voice replies. His white sneakers appear in my line of sight as he steps chest to chest with me. “I pay attention. Duh. If it wasn’t for me, Zav would’ve never figured it out. For a redhead he’s a bit of a dumb blond, don’t you think?”
She’s in my arms. She’s alive. She’s okay.
“The next time you want to fight, please don’t tell me I can’t follow,” I beg. That pulls a watery laugh from her. “I bet you followed anyway.” “I did,” I concede. “But apparently I gave you too long of a head start.”
“Zavvy?” Ava plants her hands on her hips. “I’m curious, how did you come to acquire an apartment right next to Celine?” She taps her foot. “Now that I know you better, something tells me it was by no normal means.” Zav shoots a shocked, wide-eyed gaze my way. “Uh…” “I’m just saying,” Ava goes on. “I find it highly doubtful that this place was vacant before you.” Zav’s eyes turn apologetic, and he gives me a sheepish smile. I gasp. “Zavier! Did you kill Cory?”
