She could have told me to throw myself off a parapet, and I would’ve asked which one.
I really do adore her. I would give her anything she asked. My heart aches.
“The look on your face, Princess. Am I to be your villain now?”
“Asher is a gentleman,” I say firmly. “He never lets me touch him. But sometimes I wonder . . . I wonder if he ever lets anyone touch him.”
“As I said,” he murmurs. “Formidable.”
I can’t decide if they’re the bravest pairing I’ve ever met, or if they’re so wildly chaotic that they might one day lead each other straight off a cliff.
Dane grabbed her arm, and I threatened to declare a war. When he backhanded Asher in the throne room, I wanted to set him on fire.
It settles something inside me to know I have them both in a carriage, safe and sound. Even thou...

I dodge her gaze. I’ve spent years hiding this part of my life from her, and it was all for nothing. Now I won’t be the Asher she remembers anymore. I’ll be the man relegated to the stone floor, receiving scraps of food like a chained dog.
I can’t believe this asshole is defending me and insulting me in the same breath. The worst part is that I agree with him.

“I don’t know what’s been done,” he says to me, and his voice is even lower. “But I won’t hurt you.”
“It’s not that I hate it,” he says, his voice so quiet. “I’m just . . . broken, Jory.”
They’re so wildly chaotic. It’s no wonder they’re in love with each other. It’s a miracle they haven’t gotten each other killed.
“You’re mine for now,” I say.
Fuck. I need to think about something else. It’s foolish to lust after either one of them. They’re in love with each other
“I’ve never fought with anyone like that before,” she says. “I’ll fight with you anytime you like.”
“Ready to try again?” “Fine.” “Good boy.” He smacks me on the cheek, too rough to be friendly, then draws back, letting me go.
My brain can’t keep up. I can’t believe we’ve shifted from arguing to fighting to seduction to interrogation, all in the span of one minute.
Asher. You are free to stay, just as you are free to leave. But no one will take you away from her. No one will take her away from you. Certainly not me.” I lean in, letting him hear the righteous conviction in my voice. “You are free. But if this is where you choose to remain, know this: no one will take you away from me.”
