“I know of your reputation,” I say, though my heart is pounding now. “Truly,” he says in surprise. “Tell me about my reputation.”

It’s more than that, though. It’s about Asher, too. I don’t know how to explain that I simply couldn’t leave him there—just like I couldn’t leave her there. Individually or together, they’re both intriguing. Compelling. Striking, if I’m being honest with myself.

The way he said, You’re mine right now. Like he’ll start a war if he doesn’t like what he sees. Sudden longing tightens my chest, and it’s so unexpected that my breath almost catches. Fuck. Fuck.

I’m discovering that the most powerful thing about him—in fact, the most compelling thing about him—has nothing to do with violence at all.
