“Someone wants to kill him,” says Elizabeth. “Someone wants to kill him?” Joyce asks. “When did you find that out?” “Yesterday,” says Elizabeth. “He came to see me on the terrace. They planted a bomb under his car.” “Oh, Elizabeth,” says Joyce. “It was supposed to be a wedding.” Elizabeth shrugs. “An awful lot of murders start at weddings, Joyce.”

“I did think you perked up a bit during the reception,” says Joyce. “I should have known killing was involved.”

Kendrick tugs at his hand. “Have you ever been in a war, Grandad?” “Miners’ strike 1974,” says Ron. Kendrick nods. “Why did the miners strike though?” Ron feels his chest fill. “Let me tell you a few things about late-stage capitalism, Kenny.” “Yessss!” says Kendrick.

“If you kill Ron, I kill you,” says Bogdan. “With what?” says Davey. “Bare hands,” says Bogdan. “Yes, please, what a way to go,” says Davey. “And if I kill you?” “Then Elizabeth will kill you,” says Bogdan. “Who’s Elizabeth?” “You don’t want to find out,” says Bogdan. “Perhaps I’ll kill her too?” says Davey. “You can’t,” says Bogdan. “Only God can kill Elizabeth.” “And even he’d think twice,” says Ron.
