I peeped her kindle and picked it up as I stood to leave.
I looked back at Navy, who wasn’t paying us any attention, and then back at Kennedy.
Get you a sweet girl like Navy.” She winked at Navy, who smiled.
As much as homie wanted to punish her for getting out of my car, that wasn’t the reason. He had a plan to end things with her. All men did, and he used this situation to push through with his plan. He wanted to break up with her, but place that blame on her like she was at fault for the demise of their relationship.
I swiped up on her kindle and she tried to grab it from me. “Nah, don’t be shy now… what you be reading about?” “Fucking,” she blurted. I paused and then started laughing. “Long distance was hard on you, huh?” She covered her face with both her hands. “Omg, please leave me alone. I just like some spicy shit.” “Same.” “You like to read spicy books, too?” I looked up from the book she happened to be reading. “Nah, I like to do the spicy shit that you be reading about in books.”
“Don, please.” “Landon.” “Everyone calls you Don, though,” she replied, peeking through her fingers with a goofy smile on her face. “I can tell you not about to be everyone.”
Driving around in a foreign car wasn’t new to Jaiden. He sported a simple gold chain, and he was so humble whenever he spoke in interviews. He spoke on his older sister and how he wouldn’t have been in this space had it not been for her and their family.
“We making diss tracks for niggas now!” Greene’s ass jumped up out the chair with her spliff in her hand. I laughed. “Nah, we healing and moving on… letting the best kind of love find us,” I spoke from the booth. “Press the green button, please.”
I didn’t want to talk about Kennedy with her. Not because I didn’t have shit to get off my chest. Whenever I happened to share space with Navy, the shit felt like an honor. It was special. I didn’t want to ruin this time talking about another woman.
“Don’t think I wanna be your friend forever, Bleu…” I was honest with her.
I stopped mid-stroll and looked at him. “Where are you going?” “With you.” “What?” I laughed. “Can’t come chill with you for the day?” I folded my arms. “I’m cleaning my apartment and doing laundry today. Are you sure you wanna be bored with me?” “Yeah, I’m good with dishes.” He took my hand and walked us in the opposite direction where a different car was waiting.
“This feels like you.” “Um, is that a good thing?” He was still looking around and then looked down at me. “A real good thing. Your authenticity is fucking inspiring and attractive.” “Yeah?” Landon pulled me toward him and put me on the counter he stood in front of. “Being honest, I need more time with you, Bleu.”
Pulling his head back, he rested his forehead against me as I held onto him tightly. “Strangers have sex.” I looked into his eyes, allowing him to see that I wanted this as much as he wanted it. His lips softly landed on mine, and he pulled on my lips. “I gotta problem, Bleu.” I caressed his beard as he stood in the foyer, holding me up in his arms. I stared into his eyes, scared for the next words that would leave his mouth. “What’s that?” my voice came out as almost a whisper. He hiked me up and held onto me tighter. “If we cross into this territory, I’m not gonna wanna remain a stranger.”
tell me what else you need? Let me know… I wanna make shit easy for you.”
All that no attachments and stranger shit went out the window when she bit my shoulder. She was a part of me now, and now I needed her Social Security number so I could add her to my health insurance.
“Cause I don’t think I want you doing that to somebody else.” She busted out laughing and accepted the drinks I made us. Taking a sip, she looked at the glass. “Just ask me. I won’t do that to nobody else.” “Oh please. How do I look asking you not to fuck with other bitches when we’re not together?” “You can look however you want.” I took back my shot as she stared at me, unsure if I was being serious or not. “Seriously?” “Same rules apply for you. Find out you fucking somebody else, I’m gonna have a death certificate sent to their crib.” “Excuse you?” She snorted. I shrugged. “Take it however

I pulled her closer to me when the train pulled into the station, and she looked up at me. This may have been her zone, and I was allowing her to lead, but I was a protector, too.
“Cause that fucking serial killer is still on the loose and you’re a woman out in the world alone. I’m the kind of man, and have been raised by one, who protects women. Not every nigga thinks like that, so I need to protect mine.”
“You alright?” “Shit feels nice.” “The drinks?” “Nah, your family… welcoming.”
“Thank you.” “Don’t mention it. She’s my entire world, Don… my angel in life, and she deserves happiness.” “I agree.” “Antwan, he’s a good kid. They’ve been connected at the hip since school, but I would be a fool to say that I knew they wouldn’t last. The minute Mamas decided not to go away to college with him, we knew the relationship wouldn’t last.” I stretched and walked over toward the table where he was sitting. The tea was still hot, like he just poured it before I found myself waking up on his couch. “I’m not in the business of having beef with homie. Also not trying to rush her into

want to get to know her the right way. Navy is different, and being completely honest, she got my ass gone. Never met someone like her before… she knows who she is. In a world where everyone is trying to be someone else, that shit is refreshing for me. I’m not here to tell you that we have a future because only she knows that. I’m saying I’m here to know your daughter and continue to laugh with her.”
Now it was her turn to be offended. “I’m very happy in my marriage. That man that you all get, I don’t get the same man. You all get Menace, I get Maverick… there’s a difference. Alex is an older man who isn’t going to change his ways for you. If anything, it’s gonna be expected for you to fall into line with his lifestyle.” “Nothing wrong with that… he’s worth a lot of money.” Stevie sighed and rubbed her stomach slowly. “Money means nothing.” “Says the woman who married a billionaire and lives this life. Stevie, no offense, but this conversation coming from you means nothing. You are married

She was still dancing to the headphones, and then turned in my direction, nearly jumping out her skin. “I’m sorry… you needed me for something?” “No. I wouldn’t waste your time with him. He’s still in love with me and just admitted it knowing that I’m getting married,” I lied, and I knew it was childish, but I was heavily in my feelings.
“What’s wrong with you, Pooh?” The way Pooh left his mouth and soothed my soul shouldn’t have been real. Should not have existed. He came over toward me as I leaned against the store and held my chin as tears fell down my face. “I’m okay.” “Lie to me again.” “I will be okay.” “That I know. I’m not worried about the future right now. I wanna know why you’re not okay right now.”
A little girl was in the back of a car waving, and he waved at her, and she got so giddy in the backseat as we flew past her mother’s car.
This look felt different to me. I wasn’t ready to remove her from my life. I wanted her to stare at me like this. I wanted to know the thoughts behind this look.
Pulling her face back toward mine, I said, “Look at me.” “Does it sound silly? I’ve already slept with you.” She did a small chuckle and continued to look into my eyes. “I want to court you, Pooh. If this is more than sex, we need to make that clear right here and now.” “I want it to be more than sex, but I’m also scared, too.” “Of what?” “Being hurt again. It would fucking suck to be fucked up over a nigga twice, Landon.” I laughed. “A wise weird ass man told me words don’t mean shit if you not applying that pressure.”
Menace messed with his hands as he looked at me. “I saw the way you looked at her when she was in the back.” “She cool.” “I think death is cool. Wonder… I think she’s spectacular.” He sniffed the air. “She down here?” “What in the fuck?” Corleon blurted.
“How the fuck you think I can move on without you, Bleu?”
Pulling her chin so she could look me directly in my eyes, she tried to look away. “I wanna be your boyfriend, fiancé, and husband, Bleu. May seem like I’m bullshitting, and I couldn’t possibly know. I fucking know.” “How?” she softly questioned. I took her hand and placed it on my chest. “This knows. I don’t feel like this with everybody. When we come back, I want you and your parents to meet my family.” It was a big thing for me to bring a woman to meet my siblings. I had never done it, and the fact that I felt so calm with the idea of doing it told me I was ready for that.
“What are you scared to say to me, baby?” I asked, softly caressing his face as I continued to stare into his dark brown eyes. His eyes softened, making him feel comfortable. “Think I’m falling in love with you, Bleu.” I continued to caress his face as a smile came across from my face. “Wanna know something?” “Tell me something, Bleu… feel like I’m about to have an anxiety attack.” He kept drumming his fingers on the counter I sat on as he spoke, which let me know he was nervous. “I think I’m falling in love with you, too, Landon.” “Yeah?” “Yeah.” I kissed his cheek, and put my arms around his

“I wanna be a supporter… a provider… I wanna love you, Bleu. I don’t want to be a stranger to you anymore, or a friend.”
“Landon?” he replied. “A fucking jet?” “Don’t make this weird. I’m not fucking kissing you, either.” He ended the call, and I rested the phone against my forehead as I laughed.
“God cover him and help him overcome the things he doesn’t speak about. Let him know that my intentions are pure and the love I’m feeling is real. Amen.” The words still ran through my head like she was in my ear saying them to me. I had never had someone pray for me. I could still feel her lips softly kissing my head. So soft and gentle with me. “Not at all… had me thinking of changing that Perkins to Caselli.” She snorted and shoved me while laughing. “Yeah, whatever. I meant every word I said, Landon.” “I believe you.”
She was who I wanted to be with, and if children weren’t in our future I could live with that.
