By the time I was finished with the Faceless Man tonight, he would be the one walking funny.
“Were you trying to punish me?” he asked.
“Your first present is that necklace you’ve been begging me to get you.”
“Fuck you,” I spat. “Only good girls get fucked, Aly, and from the way you’ve been cursing my name for the past five minutes, I think we’ve established that you aren’t one.”
My back arched off the bed, and his hand landed on my throat again, just beneath my jaw, keeping my head tilted away from him as something warm and wet enveloped one of my nipples. Had he taken his mask off?
It felt like my brain short-circuited. It felt like I died. It felt like I spoke to the Devil, and the Devil told me he was proud of what we’d just done.
It said: “Mommy and Daddy time.”
I could feel my ovaries back at it again, opening the floodgates and screaming, “GO, GO, GO,” as they released every single egg in my body.
“I’d love to see how a coward like you holds up against a fully conscious woman.”
“Punch him in the face,” I told an unhearing Aly. “Bash his head against that glass panel.” “Oh, no, you’re right. It’d be much better to strangle him with the cord of that machine you’re reaching for.”
If she actually hit him, I might come.
“You’re so nice that sometimes I forget what a creep you are.”
“Watching you beat the shit out of him would have been the hottest thing I’ve ever seen.”
I couldn’t remember the last time anyone had been there for me like he was. Definitely none of the men I’d slept with or dated lately. They’d all bailed when I got busy at work. What had Josh done? Watched me on shift instead, unwilling to let me out of his sight even when I asked for space.
Next time a patient tried to give me a hard time, I’d remind myself what kind of woman I was. The kind who didn’t run screaming from her masked stalker but fucked his knife handle instead.
Look.” He jerked his head down, and I followed his gaze straight to the wet spot on his crotch. I frowned. “Did you…?” “Come in my pants when your ass clenched around my finger, and you came so hard that you squirted on me? Abso-fucking-lutely.
“Help me,” I whimpered, Batman-style, and yes, it was just as pathetic as it sounds. “Oh my god,” she said with a shaky laugh. “You’re not blind. Your dumb baklava slid sideways.”
“Fine. We’ll beat him to death. Quietly. I know people who can dispose of the body.”
What had she said the first time I watched her through her computer? That Fred only liked me because cats were sociopaths, and he recognized one of his own? I should have picked up on the subtext then: Fred liked two people, Aly and me, making us two peas in a pod.
“I’m lowkey considering pulling over so I can stab him a few times and make myself feel better.”
“Too soon?” he said. “I mean, I know we haven’t had the official conversation yet, but we share a child, and I feel like disposing of a body is a boyfriend-girlfriend activity and not something you do with a casual hookup.”
“Aly? Do you want to be my girlfriend? The position comes with snacks and orgasms and maybe a little light stalking.”
“Josh has to know things, Aly. Feeling safe is important to him, and keeping the people he cares about safe is even more so. If you’re going to be with him, you’ll have to accept that he doesn’t give a shit about normal boundaries. My car has a GPS tracker that he put there the day I drove it off the lot. I have location data turned on in my phone so he can constantly check up on my whereabouts.
Like your own personal guardian angel.”
“His dad stirred one of his victims into hamburger patties and fed her to our entire neighborhood at a block party.”
“I have no regrets about stalking you.”
“Your face is about to have a misunderstanding with my fist,”
“Show me,” I said, voice hoarse from lust. I didn’t think he’d do it at first, but then he tilted his mask up even higher, just enough to reveal his lips. His tongue slid out, licking in a sinful circle as he cleaned every last drop of me off his fingers.
