By bringing mindful awareness to what is actually unfolding in our experience, we’re not necessarily going to change the rock-bottom sensations in the body. But there is every chance that we will see what’s going on with greater accuracy and precision. And that gives us the power of choice. We can decide to be in an entirely different relationship to old mental habits. We can decide either to open to all the sad or angry thoughts and feelings with awareness, as suggested in “The Guest House,” or to succumb to our habitual tendency to withdraw and turn away.
