But there’s another rivalry here today; a hatred still fresh and raw in my mind. The one I have with Madden Hastings. Who, as of last week, is my stepbrother.
But as for who they are at their core? There’s only bad and worse. And as for the one I’m currently glaring at? Well, he’s on a level all his own.
And it takes every bit of my self control not to flip Madden the bird from where I stand safely on second base.
And while his shoulders rise and fall with his heavy breaths, there’s the briefest second where his gaze flashes from my eyes, down to my mouth, before lifting back up again.
I do have a leg up on Cinderella with only one evil stepsibling instead of two.
“If you think that’s going to last, you’re even more delusional than them, MadDog.”
“Whatever you say, Teddy Bear.”
“Don’t fucking call me that.” Ah, so he can dish it, but he can’t take it.
Okay, sure. Objectively speaking, Madden is an attractive guy. He’s catnip for anyone who’s into the dark-haired, brooding, inked-up bad-boy type.
“Left or right?” “I’m a switch,” I reply instantly.
He stifles a laugh, and when I glance up, he motions toward the bed. “I meant for sleeping, not in the batter’s box, Hastings.”
At this distance, I can see his irises are more of a warm, rich brown when the sunlight hits them. I notice the slightest dotting of freckles on the bridge of his nose, giving him an air of innocence that doesn’t quite fit with the whole tattooed bad-boy vibe.
I shift my attention away from the six-foot-two bane of my existence in favor of my show. Which works…for all of thirty seconds.
I’ve been dragged into an episode of Madden’s World instead.
What the hell is happening? Is he pulling up static electricity and sending it straight into me every time we accidentally make physical contact? Jesus Christ.
“And who’s to say I’m not meeting someone too?”
He studies me for a minute with the same penetrating stare his cousin possesses before murmuring, “Nice meeting you, Theo.” I have no idea how he knows my name, seeing as Madden hadn’t used it when he introduced me, but it doesn’t really matter.
Unfortunately, Madden’s faster than me—and possibly a mind reader—grabbing my wrist before I can even take a step back toward Camden. His skin singes mine where it makes contact, and there’s an intensity in his gaze as he leans in a little closer. “Don’t worry, Theo. The only guy ending up in my bed tonight is you.”
“Believe me, Madden, you haven’t seen me try taking it out on you.”
“Play with fire, and you’re gonna get burned, Teddy Bear,” I utter, the warning coming out barely more than a gruff whisper. “Especially if you keep looking at me like that.”
“I don’t need to read your mind, Theo. Not when your body is screaming.”
I’m about to push away from him, to put some space between us again in hopes that this mixture of lust and frustration flooding my system might start to cool. If I don’t, there’s no telling if I’ll end up drowning in him or just fucking drowning him.
But I don’t get the chance, because Theo’s hand lands on my forearm. And those emotions? Well, they boil over the second his lips crash into mine.
I don’t know what caused me to snap, only that the second I do, I realize it’s the greatest mistake I’ve ever made. Because nothing—fucking nothing on this planet—could prepare me for kissing Madden.
And the moment I give in? All sense of control falls directly into Madden’s hands.
His fingers dig into my waist as he pulls me onto his lap, the harsh, sudden movement causing water to slosh over the edges of the tub.
A tortured groan leaves Madden this time as the fingers of his free hand slide through my hair, knotting through the damp strands and pulling harshly.
But doing so only earns a tightened grip and a whispered snarl. “Wanna tell me I’m full of shit again, Greyson?”
“I hate that I want you,” I whisper, the words coming out in a snarl. His dark chuckle floats over my skin like satin. “About time we agreed on something.”
Theo Greyson is in my bloodstream, whether I like it or not.
“I’m assuming this is about the part where you left me harder than granite in the hot tub and just disappeared into the ether?”
Part of me is glad he’s finally starting to fray at the edges too. God knows I’ve been falling apart at the seams for a while now; it’s about time someone else joined the party.
“What do you want, Theo?”
“What do you—” “You!” I shout instantly. “Jesus fuck. It’s you, okay? I want you.”
“Then what are you waiting for, Theo?” he asks in a gruff whisper. “I’m right here. So if that’s really what’s going on here, why aren’t you acting on it?”
I’m almost certain he’s planning to tell me to fuck off or get lost. After the way I’ve been so hot and cold, he’d have every reason to. Except, he doesn’t. Instead, he wordlessly glances behind him to the front door, then opens it and drags me inside with him.
“Fuck, I’m gonna have so much fun with you.”
Theo: I can’t stop thinking about last night.
I hate the way my pulse thrums as I read the text a few times, and I hate the little smile pulling at my lips even more. It’s almost…giddy.
His smirk turns into a full-blown grin as he pulls the helmet on his head. “Look, I’m just saying, it’s okay if you need the extra practice. I won’t tell anyone.”
