“Tch,” Vera tuts. “I don’t know why you young people always overthink these things. If you find a boy sexy, just tell him!”

It doesn’t take a super sleuth like herself to know that Millie is hiding something. But again, she senses that Millie is like a jittery bird. Step toward her too quickly and she will take flight, and Vera has a feeling if that were to happen, she would never see Millie again. A soft tread, that’s what this needs. Aiya, she hates soft treads. She has always marched like an army general looking for a new recruit to bully, and now look at her, measuring her steps like a guilty child.

“You’re welcome. I will be back. I bring more food next time.” Yay, goes TJ’s stomach. Nooo, goes his survival instincts.

“Such nonsense you talking,” Vera cries, waving her away. “I don’t need to look for trouble at my age.” At her age, one does not have the time to look for trouble; rather, one goes on the hunt for it.

She likes to think of it as a “cheeky” glass, even though she’s nowhere near British enough to pull off the word “cheeky.” But it makes it sound cuter rather than the beginnings of a potential drinking problem.

Qiang Wen likes the last ones most; that’s all he watches nowadays, just videos of strangers eating with their families. Sometimes he cries while watching these videos.

Vera squashes the urge to look around with big, scared eyes as well. Remember, Vera reminds herself, your ass is bad. Very bad. And that is a good thing.
