In survival mode, we overidentify to provide temporary security. It’s not just our self-identities but also our social ones. Research shows we treat the groups we are part of the same way. We overidentify or resort to a dominance strategy where one group overpowers all others we belong to in terms of importance. Look at our social media profiles: Republican, Democrat, mental health disorders, trauma, pronouns, or athletic identity.
