In one study, participants completed on average four and a half more reps in the bench press when there was a spotter nearby. It’s as if our brain goes, “Hey, we can take a bit more risk, and venture into the depths of fatigue because if we fail, we aren’t going to drop a weight on our chest and crush us.”
