Brogan Six is either a teenager with several pen pals or is having a dozen relationships with women by snail mail.
“Word of advice, focus more on football than getting laid. Or don’t, it’ll be fun to watch your demise.”
“Fine,” I say. “I get why he’s pissed, but I’m not a bad guy.” Archer’s expression softens. “Of course you’re not. You’re just a good guy with terrible taste in women.”
He nods thoughtfully. “If I’ve learned anything from dating women for twenty-five years now, it’s that you can’t change their minds if they’re set on something.” “You started dating when you were in diapers?” “You’d be surprised how young I was,” he says.
“The bar is so low I don’t even know what to do with you.” He pats me on the top of the head.
I don’t know what the hell just happened, but I am undone.
“You’re hot. He’d be so lucky to let you yell at him again.”
“Seriously,” she continues. “He was lucky your standards were so low in college. You deserve so much better.”
My boss, Wayne, is standing in front of the conference room going over all the projects we’re currently working on.
Come out with me and let me prove it to you.
“Well, I was, but your reaction is offensive. I could have a girlfriend.” “You haven’t had a girlfriend since high school and that lasted, what, two months?” “That’s because you’re my one true love,”
London, You’re my lucky charm. Brogan And folded inside, two more tickets to tonight’s game that starts in…two hours. His lucky charm? I snort. The man is full of lines.
Fuck my life. I pick the lesser of two evils, moving to my right and making myself visible to Brogan. His expression relaxes when he spots me and he hurries over.
Am I relieved she’s not actually dating someone? Yes, yes I am.
Cody steps up beside me as I order another beer. “Who’s that?” “That is the girl that handed him his ass at the club.” Archer smirks.
There’s a pause that feels painful, at least from my end. “Why are you calling me?” I ask. Oops. I guess I’ve lost my tact along with my ability to speak coherently. Another deep laugh rolls through the phone. “Damn, girl. You really know how to make a guy feel special.”
“What has been the highlight of your week? Totally fine if you want to say this conversation.” He says it in a way that I know he’s teasing, but god is he cocky. “I had a really great club sandwich for lunch today.”
“Excuse my fiancée, I think she’s in shock. I’m Ben. You’re Brogan Six.”
Flowers are never overkill. Also, why are you asking Knox instead of me?
funny business. You represent the Mavericks today, the same way you do when you step onto this field. No fighting, no cussing, and dear god, no hooking up with anyone.” Someone coughs
And oh god, what if they ask me about football? What position does Brogan even play?
Matching jerseys? My ears ring and my face flames hot and I just know that if I looked up at Alec right now, he’d be grinning so big.
“You commanding me like I’m a dog, Six?” the giant asks with a lift of one brow. He has an easygoing smile, but I think he could crush Brogan’s head between his colossal hands if he wanted to. Brogan obviously doesn’t value his life because he pats him on the head and says, “Good boy.”
“I have no doubt that you’ll be awesome at it. Maybe later you can do me.” Does my mind go straight to the gutter? Yes, yes it does. “Maybe,” I squeak out, and I could swear by the way he fights to keep his laughter in check that he knows exactly where my thoughts went.
“Perfect. Only our second date and my girl is going to watch me make a fool of myself.” “She might as well get used to it,” Archer says.
“I see 20/20, baby, and you’re a rock solid ten. Now stop down-talking my gorgeous girlfriend and take off that dress.” Another laugh leaves my lips. “Now those are words I never imagined saying unless I was about to get laid.”
couldn’t bring girls home when I didn’t really have one. My friendship with Archer saved my life. That’s not an exaggeration. Even before I moved in with them, I spent as much time as I could there.
A helpless flirt and an unapologetic playboy? Yes. But he’s hard not to like.
“Hi,” I say as they stare shamelessly at him. “Uncle Steve, this is Brogan.” “No shit,” he says. “Your parents told me you were seeing each other, but I thought they were joking.”
“He had the gall to act like I was overreacting. He didn’t really think it was cheating since we were at different schools.” “Ah, the different area codes excuse,” I say dryly. “Yeah. Funny how he never mentioned that as a stipulation in our relationship before. I could have been sleeping my way through the frat boys and jocks.”
sport. It’s so obvious to me that he’s either trying to make her jealous because he’s an asshole, which pisses me off, or because he wants her, which for some reason pisses me off even more.
The second his lips touch mine I forget why I thought this was such a bad idea. Nothing that feels so good could possibly be wrong. Said every woman about to make a huge mistake.
“Duh,” I say, stepping into my shoes before joining her. “What kind of boyfriend do you think I am?” “The kind that isn’t real,” she says quietly as we walk hand in hand down the hall and into the living room where Archer is chilling with Tripp and Merrick.
And the way Brogan makes me feel right now—I don’t ever want that to end.
“You’re a very good fake boyfriend,” I tell him, keeping my voice low enough that no one can overhear. He beams with the compliment. “You make it easy.”
I realize then how well we’re selling it. People think we’re really a couple. And so does my freaking heart.
