My dad is in family law, so I know the statistics of married couples staying married. Or separating and then working it out.
He pours us each a glass, then sets the now near-empty bottle behind him, out of my reach, and holds up his glass. “To the model skank.” “She’s not a skank.” I take the other glass and swallow a big gulp. It burns and I cough. “Also, I don’t love calling women skanks.” “Can you just be a petty bitch for a minute?” That pulls a laugh out of me. “She graduated with a Masters in Social Work and volunteers at the food bank twice a week. Oh, and she was a competitive runner in college.”
It’s hard to distinguish whether they’re actually interested in me or just in sex with a pro football player. I know, I know. What a sob story. Trust me, I’ll dry my tears in one of these girls’ tits later tonight. It’s not that I expect sympathy, it’s just weird.
I feel like I missed a few things last night, he signs, gaze sliding to London and then back to me in question. Just making my fake girlfriend French toast, I sign back. “Right,” he says quietly. Then signs, Are you sure it’s still fake?
The second his lips touch mine I forget why I thought this was such a bad idea. Nothing that feels so good could possibly be wrong. Said every woman about to make a huge mistake.
“You’re a very convincing fake boyfriend.” “I’m not playing, sweetheart.” I take her mouth and walk her back to the bed.
“Now everyone knows you’re a taken man.” “I don’t care who else knows as long as you do.” My heart does a funny leap thing in my chest. “I’m yours, sweetheart. In case that wasn’t obvious, I’m telling you outright. I don’t want anyone else but you.”
I thought I got it when I first met him—the charisma, the good looks, it all made sense why women and just people in general flock to him. He is still all those things. He’s funny and goofy and so hot that it takes my breath away, but it’s also the way he makes others feel. The way he makes me feel. He drowns out the noise and all the critical things I’ve heard or thought.
“Me and you, sweetheart. Let’s lose track of everything else together.”
Brogan has my back, but he won’t let me have his. Or maybe he just can’t. I don’t know what to do. But I miss him.
He’s under my skin and I want to keep him there. I hope when he’s able to see through all the hurt his parents inflicted that he wants to be there too. And more than anything, I hope he knows that there’s nothing he could share with me that would make me care about him less.
When people don’t love us the way we want to be loved, we decide it’s our own character flaw. It’s not. It just means someone else is out there waiting for you, ready to love you in all the ways you deserve.
We’re not blood, but we’re family. The family you choose, the ones who choose you back, are so much harder to find.
