“I am Callie Peterson,” she finally announced with a raised chin. “Proud environmentalist and biological technician. I was walking through the forest to get my microscope when I stumbled upon an anomaly of luna moths and a perfect circle of destroying angel mushrooms. I live at 4313 Sassafras Road, Willow Springs, Michigan,” she recited.
“He . . . just . . . he helped me up after your guard made me fall!” I stared in bewilderment at the scene before me. Not a second passed before he turned and slammed the freshly cleaned dagger into the unsuspecting guard behind me, and he fell to the ground, dead in a heap next to the other man’s body. He hadn’t even known what had happened. “What the—” I struggled.
