“I lied to you, Jameson.”
“That day you came with flowers and the letter…I told you I would give them to her…”
“I thought I was doing her a favor…I thought if she could just move on from you, be free from the eternal crush she had on you, you’d both finally be free. I never gave her the flowers or the note. She never knew that you were an option, Jameson and in hiding that, I ruined my daughter’s life.”
“Please don’t tell her, Jamie. She’ll never forgive me, not now that she’s going through all this from Luke. Now that she realizes her choice was so horrific. She won’t ever understand that I was trying to protect her.”
I didn’t
realize that Jameson holding Connor while shirtless, was such a fucking turn-on, and I certainly didn’t know that I had to wait six agonizing weeks before I had sex with him again. “This is torture.” I groaned, holding the heating pad to my stomach.
“Jameson King, if you don’t stop working out and being sexy all over the place, I’m going to wait until I’m not bleeding and then sit on your face until you can’t breathe.”
“Death by pussy, an admirable way to die, Mrs. King. Very on brand for my current position in life.”
“Is the club really what you want long term…I know it’s in your family, and I’m not downplaying it. I’m trying to ensure I help you obtain your happiness.”
“You and Connor are what make me happy, Pen.”
I might not be able to fuck him, but I could kiss him, and the man was damn good at kissing.
“Hello, sweet boy. I’m your grandma, and I love you so much.” My chest nearly caved in.
“Your grandpa Mathias is watching down on you, and your grandma Wanda. You’ll feel their love in the warm breeze when it shifts and brushes against your face. They’ll love you in the way the sun will warm you, and the way the snow will
fall when you least expect it. You’re not alone, baby boy. You’re so loved.”
“you put us back together, Penny. Made me feel hope again since I lost Mathias. I can’t ever thank you enough for letting me be a grandma.”
“What would you think about a house like this?” I shifted my gaze from the window and searched his face. “What do you mean?”
“I mean living here…raising Connor here.”
“Jamie,” I rasped, unsure why we were doing this. “I just want you to get a better look.”
“Jamie, why isn’t there a lockbox on this door?” He pushed inside and gave me another smile. “I called ahead, the realtor is doing me a favor. I asked if we could look at it alone.”
“That pond is ours, no one else can use it, figured Connor might want to catch frogs.”
“Jameson, explain this to me.”
“You asked me about the club…and I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, Pen. These last few weeks with you and Connor in the cabin…it’s put some things in perspective.”
“My future…I want to stay in Rose Ridge. I want this house, I want you, and I want Connor. That’s it. That’s all I want, Pen.”
Jamie smiled at me, and I smiled back.
This was fiction, and why not throw in a dream house? The shoe would drop eventually, until then I’d just press a flower into my journal and wish that this could be real.
“He made it pretty fuckin’ clear that he wanted nothing to do with you or Connor.”
“But then he showed up at the hospital, Jamie. People are allowed to change…you’ll be Connor’s dad, you will raise him. But, if down the line, Luke wants to get to know him—” Jameson stood. “He won’t.”
“But if he wants to, then I—” I started, but Jamie’s sneer cut me off. “He’s dead, Penelope.” My heart seemed to free fall. “He’s what?”
“Who gave the order?”
“Me.”
“You wouldn’t…he was your friend.”
“My friend? Pen, you still don’t really understand what the fuck happened between him and I, do you?”
“I may have done a shit poor job of claiming you over the years, Pen, but I did try. I—”
“Just tell me. You tried how?” “Your mom encouraged me to write you that one time, said she’d help deliver it, so I thought when I was ready to pursue you, she’d help me. I took you a bouquet of wildflowers and a letter, telling you I wanted you to be mine. She said she’d give it to you…but you never—”
“You’d already moved on with Luke, and I assumed you’d just chosen him over me. So, I had to
watch you two together, day after day. I had to hear about how he fucked you and kissed you. I watched how you gave up your future and handed him yours, only for him to set it all on fire. You have no fucking clue how long I have wanted to kill him.”
“This isn’t you, Jamie.”
“Finally killing the man who took the girl I wanted?”
“Finally putting a bullet in the head of the man who told me that your pussy was the best he’d had, which was why he agreed to give you a property patch? When he first met you, he flirted, even knowing I’d met you first, even after I pushed him against the wall that ...

“I puked my fucking guts out while he stood there laughing at the fact that he’d be able to fuck you without a condom because he’d knocked you up. While you may not like this, Penelope, you are my wife now. Mine. I will not tolerate another man in your life, not when he’s hurt you, and certainly not after he’s had you in every way that I now own you.”
“For years I had to live without you. For years I was just existing in the background. This is me, Pen…the King of Chaos. You’re tied to me now and all this hatred that taints my soul is yours. Fuck, you caused most of it.”
“This is you.”
“I’m your ruin?”
“Yes. Since that day we first met.”
“I love you, Penelope, and I don’t care how long it will take you to forgive me for this, you eventually will. You’ll agree that this was the best decision.”
“That wasn’t your call to make, you can’t just decide everything…that’s. You picked my car; I liked my car. You picked our house. You can’t just throw money or kill anyone you want. It’s not okay.”
“Yes, I can. You’re my wife, Penelope. You will get the best of whatever I think is fit for you to have. What don’t you understand about being mine?” “I know you; this isn’t you!”
“Maybe having you has changed me, Wife. Maybe realizing what it would be like to be your husband and to have you trust me with Connor, has changed me,”
“Changed you into a mindless, possessive monster?”
“Changed me into the man who would do anything to protect what belongs to him.”
