“Got it, Pen. You’re good.”
“Gone,” he muttered, and then pulled his cell out. “Jamie, I need a car…”
“I know, babe…but—”
“Your new rig.”
“Did you buy me a new car?” He glanced back over at the SUV. “It’s safer.”
“Thank you.” “You’re my wife, you don’t need to thank me for these things.” His face came into view, and then his fingers were trapping my chin so he could kiss me.
I kissed him back, forgetting that I had told him I loved him last night. I nearly bit him in a new effort not to
say it again. But my heart screamed it. I love ...

I’d been falling for Jamie since I was thirteen and he’d handed me that pudding cup.
“Your water broke!” My water…Oh.
“She’s in labor!” Callie urged and gripped my hand.
“Yeah, well that’s my fucking wife.”
“My fucking kid.” Jameson’s tone was deadly as he snarked right back, “my fucking wife,
get out. Now.”
“Stay,” I wheezed. “Jamie, I need you.” He was at my side in one long stride, his hand in mine, his lips at my hairline. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Three hours later, most of which was her pushing, the tiniest human I’d ever seen was born.
Watching them, seeing her hold him, even knowing he wasn’t mine…something kickstarted in my chest, like a forgotten dream…a deep feral desire to keep them both close to me. To claim them as mine.
“Dad, come over here, want to cut the umbilical cord?”
My hands were steady and sure as I cut, and then I watched as they
cleared his lungs, and then wrapped him up, and then they placed him in my arms. “Support the head, always,” the nurse said.
“Hey buddy,” I said, feeling more tears gather. Fuck, he was so perfect. I walked over and sat on the edge of the bed with Pen. “Look at him, Pen. Look at what you did.”
“He’s ours now, Jamie. If you wan—” “I do.”
“Then he’s yours, what are we calling him?”
I glanced over at her. “You did all the work, you decide.” She shook her head. “I think the man who’s going to raise him should pick his name.”
“Connor.” Pen hummed, then added, “Connor Mathias King.”
“Your father was a great man, Jamie, and he raised an amazing son. It would
be my honor to have our son named...

“I love you, even if you only said it from hormones, I don’t care.”
“I meant it, Jamie. I meant every word.” I kissed her again, and then rested my forehead against hers.
“You’re everything to me. You and Connor, we’r...

You have a new life in there, your wife, new kid. Go claim what’s yours—what that fucker gave up--build something from it. Don’t worry about Luke.”
“It’s not funny, Jamie, this is so humbling. We’re not at the place in our relationship where you can see me like this.”
“It was still my choice, Jamie. You do this all the time…you take the choice from me, and I hate it.”
“I’m sorry, Pen.”
“But that’s not how it ended up. I had you.”
“And you were perfect…I don’t like what you did, Jamie but I get it. I understand why you did it.”
“Thank you for being here, Jamie. Through it all, I can’t thank you enough for not leaving me. Not lettin...

they all wanted their pound of flesh. When my mom died, and you could have just left me with Miles. When you could have stood by your vice president, Luke. You chose me, so I’ll forgive...

“You deserve happiness, Jamie. In any and every way you can get it.”
“We talked about banning Penelope from showing her face around here
anymore…tired of seeing her and that bump. She needs to fucking leave.”
“The fuck is wrong with you? That’s your child, Luke…these are people you’ve known your whole life,
why are you acting like they’re so disposable?”
“Because they are. All of them. They need to get the fuck out, or I will make them get out. I don’t want to see her, or tha...

“She should have left…just the same, Luke told us
to fire her. She was let go a few days ago.” “That was my call, not Luke’s.”
“I need you to make me a promise, Jamie. I need you to promise me that you’ll get Penny out of here. Find somewhere safe for her to go to have the baby. She can’t stay here. Miles doesn’t want her here…Gene can’t take her in. Luke…”
I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be on the verge of death, unsure if your child would be okay. “I’ll try, Wanda. I can get her an apartment or something.”
“You need to get her out of Richland. The club is vicious…Luke wants her dead, in my gut, I know it. I need you to get her...

“My club, Wanda…I have to—” “She’s your club now, Jameson. Her and the baby.”
