Where were you and where were you and where were you?
Once upon a time, he promised me forever. Our forever turned into never.
“Hello, Cuddlebug.”
Show him that you are not the same desperate girl. The one who realized too late that nobody would come to save her, and she had to get up and save herself.
His smile melted into a surprised gape. “It’s my hotel.”
“Are you really going to pretend we don’t know each other?”
“You can’t kick me out of my own property.”
“I have to say, this is my first time being escorted out of a sex scene instead of being invited.”
“Have I lost my charm?”
“Are you going to drop the charade, now that we’re alone?”
He shot me a playful wink, grinning. “Your anger sets fire to my loins.”
“Well, you’re always invited for a fun ride.”
“I’ve missed you, Cuddlebug.”
“Stabbybug?” His eyes lit up as he stumbled backwards. “I can get behind that.”
“You will never be a stranger to me.”
“It’s been seven minutes since you’ve met, and Oliver still hasn’t said something obnoxious to make you slap his face. It’s almost like he is trying not to be himself.”
“If getting slapped around is what he wants, I’d be happy to accommodate his wishes.”
You don’t care why. He turned his back on you when you needed him the most.
“Briar.” He tasted the new name on his tongue, his cheekbones tinting pink.
“When do you finish work? I—”
He’d kept the ten-dollar ring I’d gifted him. My sole possession as a child. Something I’d won at a carnival.
I did not smoke pot. But I was well on my way to meth if I couldn’t bleach Briar Rose from my memory in the next few hours.
Kelsey served my drink with a big toothy smile. I took a swig of it and tossed the newspaper across the bar, unable to concentrate.
You’re waiting for her, dipshit.
But I had to see her again. This was a need, not a want.
We’d meet again, whether she liked it or not.
Was she happy?
I swiveled on my stool and eyed the elevators, waiting for her to emerge.
“Have them evacuate the presidential suite floor.”
“The entire floor.” I was not taking chances.
“Briar, wait up.”
I ignored her, running faster after Briar.
Though Briar was sensibly dressed, I remembered how cold she’d always get. Even in the summers.
“Stop. Let’s go inside and talk.”
“Someone’s gonna get hurt.”
“As long as it’s you, I’m not bothered, empty suit.”
I swam around in the pitch black, trying to find her.
“A purple-blue rose. The rarest color of all for a rose. Coincidentally, the color of your eyes.”
“Because once they become a commodity, I’ll be able to send you some every weekend.”
“Apparently, blue roses symbolize unrequited love and a deep desire that cannot be attained.”
“Did you fall for anyone else during the school year? Is there anyone I need to kill?”
“I don’t think you understand. I’m so next-level obsessed with you that I don’t even tell my friends about you. I’m such a goner that the idea of other boys knowing about you makes me sick with jealousy. The other day, Romeo saw a picture of you on my screensaver and asked who you were, and I flat-out punched him.”
“Toxic masculinity, my favorite flavor in boys.”
“How entangled you are in my soul. It’s like…a hair ball. I can’t unravel it.”
“Don’t think about other men when you’re with me.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time. Every time you touch me is a call for celebration.”
“No pressure or anything, but every moment I spend away from you is torture.”
“No one is going to be as pretty as the girl I’m in love with. That’s just science.”
