“Love is an irrational feeling,”
“I love you.”
He may not believe in fate, but I do. And I know I’m fated to be with him.
“I’m either fucking you right now. Or you’re going to bed.”
“I’m not asking you to love me,” I tell her. “I think we’re both smart enough to choose oxygen.” I don’t see how love could benefit me.
“You’re not a pit stop. You’re my finish line. There’s no one after you.”
“I want you for eternity, not for a brief moment in time.”
“You love me. Even if you won’t say it anymore.”
“It wasn’t fair to the other people I was with, but you’ve been the most fascinating person to me. And no one could really compare in my mind.” I rephrase his words and hear I love you. Even if he won’t ever say them.
“I would sit here for eighty more years and listen to you talk. I love the sound of your voice and every meaning behind your words.”
“How long do we have left?” I ask him softly, his body beginning to blur. He strokes my hair. “Pour toujours.” Forever. I smile as everything fades to black.
“Just remember our romance isn’t the fake kind.”
For as much as I give Ryke a hard time, I can’t imagine another person with a kinder soul.
“I’ve wanted so many things in life,” he says softly, “but you’re the one that has meant the most to me.”
“You and me,” he says and licks his lips. “We fuck like winners.”
The only thing about having everything is that you can lose it all.
“I don’t care about sex. I care about you being healthy and not drinking.”
I hate that my own has begun to unravel. I hate that, in this moment, I am ordinary. “The end of January.”
I see the guilt in her eyes. I’ve chosen her over my dream, and I told her never to do that for me.
I wouldn’t want to miss this for Wharton. I wouldn’t want to miss this for anything. Right here is where I’m happiest.
“I’m all in,” I tell her. “I want the kids. I want the wedding ring on your finger. I want all of it with you, Rose.
“All I’ve ever wanted to do was be on your team, Rose.”
“I like competing against you.” She sits up on her elbows, her lips so close to mine as she says, “But I like being your teammate more.” “Me too, darling.” Me too.
“You’re the only one who has ever loved me,”
The next words come from the core of my chest. Each word is like taking on water and breathing in oxygen—a paradox that I enjoy very much. “I am so deeply in love with you, Rose.” I wipe her cheeks with my thumb.
I realize, in this very moment, that love was the only thing missing from my life. And it’s the only thing that matters to me. I can live with that. As stupid as it may seem.
“Rose,” Connor breathes. And then he drops to one knee. He takes the black box from his pocket and flips it open. “Will you spend the rest of your life with me?”
“One day,” he breathes, “we’re going to look back and recount all that we’ve done together. And we’re going to think, goddamn we were only twenty-four.” My eyes well. “We’re the responsible pair.” “The ones who clean everyone’s messes.” “The ones everyone turns to,” I add. “The most adult, even though we’re fairly new at this.” I laugh into a tearful smile. This is about to happen. We’re going to be together. It feels like the start of a lifetime. Any fears I ever had, any reservations, are gone. I trust that he’ll stay here, for me. That I am more than just a chase. “Kiss the sky with me,”
...more
“I love you more than I could ever love myself,” I whisper the words and lift Rose’s chin again, raising her gaze to mine, not to say anything else. I just smile as I watch her eyes churn with a familiar, unbridled emotion. I love knowing I’ll fall asleep and wake up to those impassioned eyes. I love that the most terrifying what if—the one without her—is the path that won’t ever come true. My new dreams are in the faraway future, filled with children. And love.
