Kissing this Alpha felt like coming home in a way I couldn’t put my finger on, and all I wanted was more.
“You didn’t tell me you liked to play with fire.” “I can handle a little fire.” “People always say my hair’s on fire. You going to put me in my place?”
Having someone mean everything to you and then see it wasn’t mutual—that apparently you meant less than nothing to them—wasn’t a feeling I’d ever wanted to understand.
I have pretended with others, yes. But Isolde Allen, I am not pretending with you.”
“Better be careful. We’re the devils who will drag you down and dirty that halo. We may not have corrupted you yet, but it doesn’t mean we won’t.”
“When I know what I want, I make it happen.” The way he was looking at me made me doubt it was the sunscreen he was talking about. Butterflies fluttered around in my stomach, and for the first time in what felt like forever, they weren’t nerves, but anticipation.
smiling when I saw Isolde curled up in the middle of the giant bed with everyone else around her, watching, entranced. Like Isolde was a dragon egg at the center of our hoard.
No matter what happened, with him or otherwise, we would be her shield. Because it was about fucking time she had one.
I woke up between Cade and Rowan, and it might be the best sleep I’d ever had. They made me feel safe on a level I didn’t even understand, and I wasn’t fully ready to examine that.
“Stop,” I laughed. “It’s enough for him to fuck off. I don’t need to kill him.” She sighed. “Fine. I’ll settle for castration.”
“No more.” “Because the world began to collapse when I opened my own door.” “You are perfectly capable of opening your own doors,” Cade nodded in agreement. “But here’s the real question. Why should you have to?”
I hadn’t really understood why he liked watching, not to judge, but it had never done anything for me. But being watched like that? Holy shit. It felt like sunlight pouring directly into my veins.
The grief in her voice speaking about being alone tore me apart inside. But she would never be alone again. Not if she didn’t want to be. We were so far gone for her, we barely wanted to let her out of our sight.
And they had done it because they wanted to. Because they wanted me. Because I was theirs.
The only thing that could make us walk away is you telling us to. Otherwise, we’re yours. Everything we have and everything we are. We’ll go where you go. Whatever you want, we’ll make it happen.”
“You’re it for me, little flower,” he bent down to whisper. “And I’ll always be the place you can come to when you need to let go. I’ll never let you fall.”
They smoothed out the hard edges of my scars and filled in the empty spaces I’d never noticed. They cared for me effortlessly, and when I was with them, it was easier to breathe.
When she was in the center of the five of us it felt perfect. Like she was our sun, and we orbited around her.
“I’m not a different person. I’m just a person who now knows how much better life is when someone isn’t holding her back and making her feel like shit.
You claim we’re so much lower than you? Maybe we are. But remember that those of us who play in the dirt know how to dig. And six feet isn’t that far. Understood?”
“We can feel you’re not fine, princess, and it’s okay to not be fine. You’re not alone anymore. You don’t have to hold everything in. We share it. Lift the burden together. It’s one of the best things about having a pack.”
“A reminder of what?” Joel smiled, and my pack stepped in, wrapping me in more than just their arms. “That the ocean isn’t the only thing that’s endless.”
