“W-wait!” he screams, clutching his stomach wound. “Please, don’t do this, Kain!” He looks from side to side, attempting to be discreet. He’s still trying to get his gun. Still trying to kill me. At the murderous look in my eye, Wes changes tack. “D-don’t do this, Kain,” he whimpers, his voice cracking every other word. “We can get past this! Please, I-I’m sorry I betrayed your trust. Please, Kain… I don’t want to die.”
“Ghost sends his apologies. This was not supposed to happen.” All at once, the smile drops from the boy’s face. “He asks that you spare me and return to the cabin as soon as possible.” A growl leaves my chest. You’re just as insufferable as he is. “Who are you?” I demand. Why should I trust you? “They call me Orion. I’m Ghost’s… apprentice, for lack of a better word. I’m also the one who got you all the information about Drew and Sandra.”
Kain. “Earmuffs, flower.” That voice, that low, growly tone, pours over my skin, and lightning cracks in my veins. Kain. You came.
“Lillith,” he whispers, his voice filled with agony that doesn’t belong to this earth. “What did they do to you?” I shake my head, unable to speak the words that will ease that look. I’m fine, I want to say. Everything is fine now that you’re here.
“I’m here now, flower. I’m here,” he murmurs, cradling me so close, so tight, I’m worried I’ll break. I welcome the sensation. “Can we go home?” I whisper. Kain’s gaze softens. “Yes. Yes, Lillith. We can go home.”
“I’m never cold when your arms are around me.” Oh God. A shot to the chest would have felt better than the pain those words bring. Such lovely, fine words from an even lovelier, finer woman. “You’re perfect,” I whisper. I can’t help it. Can’t help it, can’t help it, can’t help it. She reaches up, throws her arms around my neck, and then… and then she kisses me.
The pain—the pain is familiar. I can live in this pain—die in this pain, if it means Lillith gets out alive. I’ll protect her with my dying breath, and then I’ll let my useless body offer cover until his bullets run out.
From somewhere in the distance, I swear she’s calling my name. Kain… Kain… Kain. But it’s not my name—not my real name, and regret replaces the blood I’ve lost, flows through my veins and pours out of me. I’m sorry, Lillith. Sorry I never told you my name. The sixth shot rings out, and the blackness swallows me whole.
That voice… no. No, there’s no way. No possible, earthly— “Dr. Slater. Thank you for finally joining us.” I turn slowly, so slowly, and come face-to-face with that familiar, weathered face. His wiry brows shoot up as he takes in my face, at the blood coating my chest and arms. For a moment, it’s almost as if he doesn’t recognize me—doesn’t recognize the feral creature in front of him. “Lillith. What-what are you doing here? Why are you with these people?”
“You’re going to be fine, I promise. We’re just going to take the tube out.” Something in her voice calms that primal instinct to fight, smothers all the fire in my veins. She promised. And Lillith wouldn’t lie to me.
Those eyes. The eyes that have saved me, not once but twice. Eyes that unlocked my mind to a world of color, a universe of emotion. Beautiful eyes, shining with the most beautiful of souls. “Reinhold.” Lillith jerks at the sound of my voice, at the raw emotion stored there. “W-What?” Her brows knit. “What did you say?” “Reinhold,” I repeat, my chapped lips carving upward in a grin. “That’s my birth name. Reinhold Hellfyre. I never got the chance to tell you before. It didn’t sit right with me, you not knowing. Now you do.”
“Stop whining,” I grumble, rolling my eye at Ghost’s middle-finger salute. “And would you kindly fuck off? I want a minute alone with Lillith.” “Fine. I have to find out where Orion sulked off to, anyway. Lillith.” He mocks a bow in her direction, pivots, and leaves the same way Dr. Slater did. As soon as he leaves, I go to sit up in bed, but the disapproving stare from Lillith has me lowering just as quickly.
I kiss her gently, pouring everything into her that I can’t say. Hoping, needing her to understand. I love you. “And I, you, Kain,” she whispers, smiling against my mouth. My muscles tense, but one stroke of her hand has me relaxing. “I didn’t know I said that out loud.” She pulls back, giving me a full view of that heart-stopping grin. “I think I’ve heard that somewhere before. Sounds very… me.” “Hmm.” My grip tightens on her waist, and I drag her back up to my mouth. “I wasn’t done with you.” She kisses me back, and the air stills. Everything is quiet, still. Wonderful. “I love you, my

“Thank you for being here. For being you.” “I love you,” I reply. “I love you.” “And I, you, little flower.” He leans down and brushes his lips against mine. “Endlessly. Hopelessly. Devastatingly.”
“I love you, Lillith,” I breathe, all but choking on my words. “I love you with everything inside this worthless, hollow shell. I love you so completely and effortlessly that it scares me.” I press my forehead to hers, allowing my lid to close. “I belong to you. Wholly. Endlessly. No part of me doesn’t belong to you, my flower. I’m in the palm of your hand, a vise wrapped around your little finger. And happy to be,” I add, pressing a kiss to her temple. Lovely. So lovely. “I love you, Kain,” she murmurs, wrapping her arm around my neck and giving me that little smile. “For now. Forever. Till

I pull back with a nod, my silent promise to her. This man—no, this monster—will be dealt with. “I’ll be right back,” I say, patting her hand before standing and moving to the door. “I promise.” Pulling out my phone, I thumb over to Kain’s contact and dial the number. It rings once and then clicks through. “Hello, flower,” the voice purrs. “Who do you have for me today?”
