“That, and I was thinking about how good you smell.” Kain chokes. Actually chokes at my words. “I… thank you.”
“Is that a blush I see?” I wiggle my brows, refusing to back down even as his eyes darken.
“They said the tendons in her heart ruptured. A medical anomaly is what the doctors called it. A tragic, unfortunate loss of life. A fluke.”
“A broken heart. She died of a broken heart,” I whisper, worried if I speak any louder, my chest will crack in two.
Kain blinks, then cocks his head. “That is quite a lot.” Andddd we’re back to square one. “If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fi—”
I don’t want her to. Selfishly, I want her to look at it and tell me it’s okay anyway. That she can handle it, that she wants to.
I had Ghost pay the rent for the rest of the year from my bank account. Not for her to live in—as long as I have any say, she’ll never step foot in this hellhole again—but
but so I can continue to feed the little pigeon she cares about so much.
The little bird is nestled on top of one of Lillith’s pillows, a bounty of feathers, sticks, and zip ties strewn around him. The bag of worms is exactly where I left it, though it’s considerably less hefty than yesterday.
“Little porker,” I mumble, grabbing the bag to inspect the tiny beak-sized hole he managed to poke in the side. Guess you’re not so helpless after all.
It lets out a weird chirrup noise and puffs up, its mouth opening and closing as if i...

But Lillith is so good, so gentle and kind. Maybe she can cancel out some of my wretchedness. Maybe…
There’s a faint rustle of bedsheets, then an incoherent jumble of words. Lillith likes to talk in her sleep, though it rarely makes any sense.
“Yeah? Fuck you.” I grumble, turning to watch a fly that just landed on the chair's arm. “I’m getting really tired of the sound of your voice.”
“Likewise, friend.” “Shut the fuck up.” I roll my eyes. “We’re not fucking friends.”

“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”
“A few days. I just wanted to see how long you’d last, then I was going to escape.”
“But you’ve intrigued me. Watching you these past few days has been more entertainment than I’ve had in forever. I’d like to offer you salvation, my friend.”
For the first time all week, it’s not my nightmare that wakes me. It’s his. I can’t pretend to imagine the contents, but I know all too well what it’s like to be trapped inside your own mind. It sucks. Royally.
The other part reminds me that this man fucking kidnapped me. I should be hoping for a heart attack to strike in his sleep.
“I know you’re up.” His voice is hoarse, and it causes another pang to ring in my chest. “Will you be good for me tonight?”
I’m not sure how I’ll get out of this, but I’m terrified that the longer I stay, the less I’ll want to leave.
“Fuck.” I cough, my eyes watering as I take in the label. Just my luck. Absinthe.
“I was going to ask how you’re doing, but then I saw you chugging a bottle of fucking absinthe.”
“Right. The only thing that matters is what Kain wants. I forgot,”
“Fuck you, Kain,” he spits. “You’re a shitty best friend, you know that?”
“What’s wrong?” he mocks, still trying to catch his breath. “Some bitch turned down your ugly ass again?”
“Good,” I snarl, turning my glower to the unconscious heap beneath me.
“You don’t mean that,” Carlotta snaps. “He’s your best friend, for fuck’s sake. If you kill him, you’ll never forgive yourself.”
“Would you stop being such a shit taco and get up? Someone needs to make sure Wes is still breathing,”
She’s mine, just as you are. Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine.
he pulls me into him. My eyes shoot open as he nuzzles into the crook of my neck.
“Why won’t you let me have you?” His voice is tortured, and I know I wasn’t meant to hear that last utterance.
I try to lift his arm, but it weighs a fucking ton.
